2020 Blue Hills Deer Hunt Update
October 9, 2020
The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) announced that the 2020 Blue Hills Deer Hunt program will take place on Mondays through Thursdays beginning on November 16 until December 3, 2020, with the exception of Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26, 2020. DCR has announced that this year's hunt will be archery only and that there will be no shotgun hunt this year. I want to thank the DCR for listening to concerns and removing guns from the controlled public hunt.
While it is welcome news that this year will exclude the use of shotguns, it is disappointing that the hunt will continue in any form during the COVID-19 pandemic. At a time when the Blue Hills has been a place of refuge for those wishing to safely leave their homes and get fresh air during the pandemic, the hunt and the continued presence of weapons in the Blue Hills remains a safety risk.
"No one should ever have to wear orange or look over their shoulder in the Blue Hills. Unfortunately, despite lackluster results of years past, a hunt will take place again this year. I will continue to push for further study of deer population and alternative ways to improve the Blue Hills ecosystem," said Rep Driscoll.
