Driscoll Signs on to International Holocaust Remembrance Day Resolution

FEBRUARY 7, 2024


Representative Bill Driscoll Jr. (D-Milton) joined 91 of his colleagues in cosponsoring and signing on to a Resolution recognizing International Holocaust Remembrance Day. January 27th of each year is an opportunity for the world to join together and commemorate the millions of lives lost during this dark period of our history.

WHEREAS, Saturday, January 27, 2024 is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and marks the seventy-ninth anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp; and

 

WHEREAS, on this anniversary the Massachusetts House of Representatives recommits itself to combatting the global rise in anti-Semitism; and

 

WHEREAS, On May 26, 2016, thirty-one member states of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), of which the United States is a member, adopted a non-legally binding “working definition” of anti-Semitism; and

 

WHEREAS, the working definition reads as follows: “Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”;  therefore be it

 

RESOLVED, that the Members of the Massachusetts House of Representatives hereby recognize January 27, 2024 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day; and hereby recognize this day as the seventy-ninth anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp; and hereby recognize the non-legally binding “working definition” of anti-Semitism adopted by thirty-one member states of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA); and be it further

 

RESOLVED that copies of these resolutions be forwarded by the Clerk of the House of Representatives to the New England Holocaust Memorial Committee and the Consulate General of Israel to New England.
