Upcoming Work & Temporary Closure at Red Line Ashmont and Mattapan Line – July 16, 2022

Upcoming work on The Mattapan Line, serving Milton, will result in a temporary rail closure & diversion to buses on Saturday, July 16, 2022.

A public hearing for the Mattapan Highspeed Line Transformation Program was held on April 13, 2022, to inform neighbors of the start of the design portion of the multi-year process to upgrade the rail line and stations. The temporary closure on July 16 continues the forward progress and will inform the design process for the overall transformation program.

Specifically this day will be used to conduct a full 360⁰ LiDAR scan and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) of the corridor, which will help gauge the full design process of the project, limiting future closures and minimizing rider impacts.

Additionally, earlier this week the MBTA announced that they will conduct crucial infrastructure improvement work at the Red Line Ashmont branch. This work will occur concurrently during the closure on Saturday, July 16, 2022.

During these scheduled closures, shuttle busses will run in both direction between JFK/UMass and Mattapan stations beginning at the start of service on July 16th, and until work has concluded at approximately 6pm on the same day.

The purpose of diverting service is to allow work crews to replace the existing signal house at Ashmont station, as well as other infrastructure improvements to that location.
